Sickle Man

The dark bearded old man, in his thick wool Jellaba; the man who used to sell palm tree hearts close to the souk in the medina; Palmetto, or Chemmakh as it is known locally. Few people would remember him nowadays. I remember him well; the only seller we couldn’t steal from. He constantly held a sharp sickle by his side. He seemed quite ominous. Kids nicknamed him Bouchefra; the sickle man. I called him palm tree executioner.
